Legal questions about fine art rarely stay within one discipline. A dispute over a single work can involve title, authentication, provenance, contracts, and estates, and can draw in collectors, dealers, auction houses, and institutions.

I advise collectors, dealers, estates, and other art-market participants on title disputes, authentication challenges, provenance questions, and the legal risks of acquiring works or cultural artifacts with uncertain histories. That work draws on nearly three decades of litigating real property issues, where many of the same questions can arise: chain of title, good-faith purchasers, and competing claims to the same asset.

With a background in art history, I follow developments in restitution and repatriation law closely. Art disputes are also especially well-suited to mediation. Confidentiality can protect reputations and market value, and a negotiated resolution can preserve relationships among collectors, dealers, and institutions that litigation might damage.
